Professional deer manager Tom Davies of Dartmoor Deer Services is out to shoot or at least spot three species of deer today. Dartmoor, where he lives, has the habitat for red deer, fallow and roe. He starts his day with a fallow cull outing on a local pheasant shoot. Then he heads into one of Devon’s wilder valleys to look for a big red stag he knows well.

It isn’t the only deerstalking film we have made with Tom. In this film, he is pulling on his stalking boots for the first time in months. He stood on a rusty nail and the infection means he has lost a toe. But that’s not stopping the deer ravaging local wheat and corn crops. He has asked Ollie Williams from neighbouring Cornwall to come and see if they can reduce numbers.

The pair of them go out again to test the question: when do you use a thermal spotter and when do you not? Tom finds his old XQ50 invaluable when he is culling fallow bucks. However, there are times when it aint as good as a pair of eyes, as Ollie Williams shows him.

What kit does Tom use for deerstalking? He reviews his set-up:

Zeiss Conquest HD 10×42 binos

Swarovski Z6i 3-18×50 riflescope

Pulsar Helion XQ50 thermal spotter

KUIU hunting clothing

Blaser R8 Professional Success rifle
